ST. LOUIS, Mo.—Starting in the Fall of 2023, the Fontbonne University Esports program will be expanding its gaming options to play with the additions of Rocket League and Valorant.
"In cooperation with our current Esports coach, athletic administration, and the support of President Blattner, we are pleased to announce in the Fall of 2023 we will change our gaming to offering Rocket League and Valorant," said Director of Athletics Danielle Doerfler.
"We've been working to build our Esports program and feel as though a time has come to switch up our recruitment and gaming opportunities. As with any sport and coaching you need to adapt with the needs of your team and we look forward to the excitement that will surround these two games."
"I'm very excited to help announce the addition with the new games of Rocket League and Valorant for the Fontbonne Esports team," said head coach Braden Woolsey. "League of Legends is a game that is becoming less and less popular among the high school and college scene with many students playing Rocket League and Valorant to a great amount."
He added, "I believe that this fresh start of games will help draw students to the Esports scene and give us a greater community feel due to its easier understanding and learning. I look forward to the future and what will be to come with competition in the new era of games."
Rocket League is a fantastical sport-based video game, it's soccer with cars, featuring a competitive game mode based on teamwork and outmaneuvering opponents. Currently, there are over 200 colleges and universities offering over 10 million dollars in scholarships.
Valorant is a 5v5 multiplayer first-person shooter game where one team attacks and the other team defends. The main game mode, Search and Destroy, is very similar to CS:GO. The attacking team's goal is to plant a bomb (called a spike) and have to detonate, while the defending team tries to avoid that.
Matches are 25 rounds long, with each round lasting 100 seconds. The first team to win 13 rounds wins the match overall.
