Fontbonne Edges Blackburn in Homecoming Game

The Blackburn College women's soccer team lost their first conference game of the season on Saturday afternoon. The Beavers were defeated by the Griffins of Fontbonne University by the score of 4-3.

Blackburn scored first when Sammi Ferguson scored on a breakaway in the 28th minute. Fontbonne would even the scoring four minutes later though. The score remained tied at halftime.

The Beavers would jump out in front in the second half by scoring back to back goals. Ferguson assisted on a goal by Allison Guerra and Guerra then assisted Ferguson's second goal of the day to give Blackburn a 3-1 lead.

Blackburn couldn't hold the lead as Fontbonne would score three unanswered goals to solidify the victory. Fontbonne's game winner came in the 82nd minute.

Even though the Beavers were outshot 22 to 5, they played well and almost took down the heavily favored Griffins. Shana Sewick had 10 saves on the afternoon.

The women will travel to Webster on October 3 to play thier second SLIAC contest. The game is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.
