St. Louis- Fontbonne University baseball takes their St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference record to 8-3 after tonight's 5-3 and 8-0 wins against Westminster College.
Opening the doubleheader, Fontbonne's Tanner Carter hit a two-run shot over the fence in the second. Westminster retaliated when Tyler Branneky hit a solo home run in the bottom of the inning. Fontbonne would score three more runs in the third for a 5-1 lead off three singles, a sacrifice bunt and a walk. Westminster scored two more runs in the fourth, but couldn't put any more runs across home plate.
Alex Roedner and Matt Wallis each doubled for the Griffins. Wallis also walked twice. Jacob Becker got the win for Fontbonne, while Colin Brinkner took the loss for Westminster.
Fontbonne left seven runners on base over the first four innings of Game 2 while Westminster left five on base. Wallis hit his second double of the night to put Fontbonne on the board. A total of four singles, two doubles, and a balk in the fifth allowed Fontbonne to score five runs. In the top of the ninth, Roedner homered and Carel hit his second double as well, driving in a run while Nick Rothweiler hit a sacrifice fly to bring Carel across home plate for the eighth and final Griffin run.
During the second game, Nick Platipodis was three for four with a walk and a double. Wallis hit another double to total three on the night, and starting pitcher Cale Laughlin struck out seven in five innings of work with three walks and two hits. Ian Albright struck out two Blue Jays in his only inning on the mound.
Jake Lund took the loss for Westminster.
Fontbonne baseball hosts Eureka College this Saturday, April 11th. The doubleheader begins at Shaw Park at 1pm.
