Baseball advances to SLIAC Tournament
St. Louis, MO- The Fontbonne University baseball team will advance to the 2014 St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament this weekend. The Griffins (23-17 overall and 17-10 conference) will play as the fourth seed in the tournament.
No. 2 Webster University sits at the top with a 26-0 SLIAC record followed by Spalding University (20-7) and Greenville College (19-8).
This will be the sixth time in the last seven years that Fontbonne has participated in the tournament, looking for their second advance to the NCAA Div. III Regional round.
This past weekend Webster swept Fontbonne 5-3, 12-4 and 14-2. Game One saw the Gorloks with a 4-0 lead before Fontbonne scored three to make it a one-run game after five. Webster posted their insurance run in the sixth.
During Game Two, Fontbonne held a brief 2-1 lead after four innings before Webster posted seven runs in the fifth for an 8-2 advantage. The Gorloks scored four more in the sixth, but the Griffins wouldn't end the game early with the 10-run rule, scoring two runs in the seventh trying to make a comeback.
On the weekend, Fontbonne totaled 20 hits, 9 walks, and 5 doubles. Webster pitchers struck out 16 batters while Fontbonne pitchers struck out 9 Gorloks.
Jacob Wilson went 2-3 in the first game while Ethan Boyer went 3-4 in game two.
Fontbonne is set to play SLIAC #1 Webster at 5pm on Thursday, May 8th. The tournament is hosted at Glik Park in Highland Ill. Loser plays again at 8pm that night. Winner returns Friday for a 5pm contest.
