Seniors encounter final game at Shaw Park
St. Louis, Mo. - Cale Laughlin struck out two batters in the first inning to get the ball rolling, but with four errors the Griffins fell to No. 24-ranked Webster University tonight 3-0. All three Gorlok runs were unearned.
After Webster scored two runs in the second inning, it was a quiet night until Vincent Santarsiero was called on a balk, sending the Gorlok's final run home in the eighth inning.
While the Griffins only got off four hits on the night, they still made the game exciting for their seniors in the final home contest of 2015. Webster tried to pick off Zach Carel on first in the second inning. The first baseman's throw to the shortstop covering second was too slow and Carel was in safe for the stolen base. Webster's leadoff hitter in the third inning doubled to left and Fontbonne sent the ball on a relay to third in plenty of time, eliminating the threat.
With one out after the balk and a Gorlok on third, Steven Belovich made a great over-the-shoulder sliding catch, keeping the runner from going home.
Seniors Alex Hill, Justin Wallace, Matt Wallis, Ben Stratton and Caleb Tatum encountered their final game at Shaw Park tonight.
Fontbonne completes their 2015 season on the road at GCS Ballpark in Sauget, Ill. in a doubleheader Saturday against Webster. First pitch is set for noon.
