St. Louis, Mo. - The Griffins' 3-2 win over Illinois Wesleyan was their second in a row as they improve to 2-5 on the year.
After Tanner Carter pitched a solid 7.2 innings and left with the game tied 2-2, third baseman Devon Tolan stepped to the mound to close out the game. After the Griffins missed a chance to win the game in the bottom half of the ninth on a liner turned double play by the Titans, Tolan kept Fontbonne in the game, allowing just one hit. Ethan Boyer led off for the Griffins in the final frame with a double to right field. Illinois Wesleyan decided to intentionally walk Ben Greenway, and after Zach Carel was hit by a pitch, Tolan stepped to the plate with the bases loaded and one out. Tolan secured the game-winning run after drawing a walk for Boyer to cross the plate.
Carter struck out five and allowed one earned run. Tolan struck out one, recorded two RBIs and earned his first win of the season. Greenway singled on two chances and walked three times.
Fontbonne is at home again tomorrow, Sunday, March 6th with a doubleheader starting at noon against the University of Chicago.
