Auburndale, Fla. - Fontbonne baseball opened their spring break RussMatt Invitational play against Central-region foe Loras College on Sunday. The Griffins fell 10-4, taking their overall record to 4-9.
With a 1-1 score, Fontbonne scored three runs in the third to take a 4-1 lead. The runs were courteous of three singles, a wild pitch and a double by Patrick Shuff. Loras tallied one more run in the fifth and then secured the lead in the sixth with four runs. The Duhawks scored twice in each of the last two innings for the six-run difference.
On the mound for the Griffins, Tanner Carter suffered the loss, allowing nine hits while striking out five in 5.1 innings of work. Alex Steins earned the win for Loras, only striking out three Griffins in eight innings.
Freshman Aaron Boyer led with two hits on four at-bats and one RBI.
Fontbonne is scheduled to play St. Norbert's College on Monday followed by Grove City Tuesday. After a free day Wednesday, the Griffins close out the week against Elmhurst Thursday and Grinnell Friday.
