Baseball concludes Florida trip with win over Grinnell
Auburndale, Fla. - After falling to Elmhurst 7-3 on Thursday, Fontbonne baseball rebounded to defeat Grinnell College in their final game over spring break. The Griffins are now 6-11 overall.
Fontbonne earned the first run in the fifth inning after Miguel Villegas reached on an error and advanced to third on two wild pitches. With two outs, freshman Aaron Boyer singled to center to drive in Villegas.
Brendan Beck got the start for the Griffins and got into some trouble in the sixth after two doubles tied the game. Austin Earnest came in in relief with runners on first and third and no outs. Earnest struck out his first batter and then got out of the jam on a grounder turned double play.
With two outs in the seventh, Ethan Boyer singled and stole second to get into scoring position. Catcher Patrick Shuff drove in Boyer for the game-winning run.
Earnest tallied his second win of the year as both teams stranded 10 runners on base. Aaron Boyer went three-of-four on the day with one RBI.
Fontbonne returns to SLIAC action next weekend when they travel to Spalding University in Louisville, Ky. on April 1st for a doubleheader. The Griffins return to Shaw Park on April 5th to take on Robert Morris- Springfield.
