Bears end Griffins' win streak
Beck picked off two Bears, including this throw to first in the fifth.
St. Louis, Mo. - Fontbonne baseball fell to neighboring Washington University this afternoon in a doubleheader that saw their four-game win streak snapped. The Griffins fall to 10-15 on the year while the Bear improve to 19-11.
Game one
It looked like the first meeting of the day might go into extra innings as the game was tied heading into the bottom of the ninth inning. Unfortunately for the Griffins, WashU drove in the winning run on a hit up the middle for the one out, game-winning single.
Nick Kenny recorded the only hit for the Griffins and advanced to third when Nick Rothweiler's long ball to left was tipped off the Bears' defender's glove. Evan Lloyd recorded the RBI on a hit to first base.
Austin Earnest left the game after pitching four innings and a Griffin 1-0 lead. Brendan Beck took over on the mound and after allowing a walk which then added a steal for the Bears, Beck recorded the third out with a pickoff to Ethan Boyer behind the runner.
Fontbonne allowed WashU to tie the game in the sixthon a leadoff bunt. WashU shortstop Austin Darmawan placed a bunt that Devon Tolan tried to throw out at first, but the speedy leadoff hitter beat the throw, which then went into right field. Darmawan made it to third and scored as the throw from the cutoff to third was inaccurate as well.
Santarsiero pitched the seventh for Fontbonne with Brett Lange on the mound for the final two innings. He recorded his first loss.
Game two
WashU got on the board in the first inning and led 1-0 until the Griffins scored three in the third. Right fielder Sean Wallace (who made a nice diving catch in the previous inning), singled and then stole second. With two outs, Boyer walked, which brought up catcher Patrick Shuff to the plate. Shuff singled to right as each runner moved up a base. Wallace rounded third and was stopped by head coach Ryan Good on his way home. Wallace headed back to third as the throw came in, only to find that Boyer was already halfway to third himself. Wallace continued back to third and then broke for home as WashU's catcher threw to get Boyer who evaded the rundown. Meanwhile Shuff took second. Fontbonne's final two runs came on the next hit as Ben Greenway singled to right. The one hopper got past the right fielder to score Boyer and Shuff.
In the fourth inning, WashU head coach Pat Bloom contested a second out at first. Both he and his first base coach claimed that Logan Mueth came off the bag at first twice. Bloom was ejected by the fielding umpire, to which his team answered with three doubles in a row. Each was hit down the line that scored four runs and gave WashU a 5-3 advantage.
The Griffins recorded two groundouts to start the sixth inning until Tyler Scott got into some trouble on the mound. A walk, two doubles and a single scored two for the home team. Freshman Alex Coggins came into the gave for Fontbonne. Coggins was called for a balk, much to the confusion of all fans that scored a run. WashU's final run of the game came on a muffed throw to second that would have shut down the inning. The home team sent two more Bears home and walked in their final run in the ninth to end the game early as Fontbonne fell 13-3 in eight innings.
