St. Louis, Mo. - Fontbonne baseball came back from a 5-2 deficit to take the series from Eureka College with a 6-5 win on a walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth. The Griffins are now 13-20 overall and 6-9 in SLIAC play. Fontbonne is scheduled to host Greenville College in a doubleheader Wednesday, barring any weather delays.
Fontbonne plated the first run of the game as a dropped infield fly allowed a run to score in the bottom of the first. The Griffins took a 2-0 lead in the second, started by Jonathan Hoevelmann's rip down the left field line for his first collegiate triple. The freshman came home on a single by Ethan Boyer.
Eureka had a hot third inning as the first two runners walked with a stolen base and both advanced on a wild pitch. The Red Devils took the lead when Ray Vogel blasted a home run to left. Another walk and a steal put their fourth mark in scoring position. He was scored on a single up the middle. Eureka added another run in the sixth after a double and a single to lead 5-2.
Fontbonne scored three runs on four hits in the seventh inning. Sean Wallace tripled to right center to drive in Boyer. Ben Greenway hit to first base and Wallace won the faceoff and crossed home. With two outs, pinch hitter Patrick Shuff walked and went to second on a single by Logan Mueth who came in to pinch hit as well. Both took a base on a passed ball and Shuff tied the game when Nick Rothweiler singled.
Greenway got Fontbonne started in the ninth with a single to center. Steve Belovich came in to pinch run and moved to second as Ryan Schocker sacrifice bunted. After Belovich advanced to third on a wild pitch, Eureka intentionally walked Shuff and Mueth to bring Rothweiler to the plate with no outs and the bases loaded. The senior came through for the second time in the game, hitting a walk-off single up the middle.
Joey Clemente came in to pitch for the Griffins in the fifth inning when Fontbonne trailed Eureka 4-2. He battled through for his first collegiate win as he struck out nine over five innings and allowed just two hits and one run.
Boyer went three-of-five on the day while Rothweiler drove in the tying and winning runs.
