Griffins suffer two games to Greenville
St. Louis, Mo. - Fontbonne baseball suffered two losses last night to Greenville College to put the Griffins at 13-22 overall and 6-11 in conference play. Greenville draws closer to .500 with an 18-19 overall record and advance to 13-7 in conference.
Game one
Greenville held a 4-0 lead after three innings, at which point starting pitcher Vinny Santarsiero was pulled for the Griffins. Replacing him on the mound was Brendan Beck who allowed just one hit over four innings as the Griffins tried to make a comeback.
Fontbonne crossed three runs over the plate in the bottom of the sixth inning. With one out, Sean Wallace reached on an error by the shortstop who mishandled the ball and never threw to first. That error proved lengthy for Greenville as the next Griffin lined out. After Logan Mueth walked, the Griffins hit back-to-back doubles from Patrick Shuff and Devon Tolan to score their three runs. Fontbonne then stranded Tolan a flyout to end the inning.
For Greenville, Trevor Montgomery hit a two-run homer, an absolute bomb to left field in the top of the third.
Game two
Fontbonne starting pitcher Austin Earnest got off to a hot start. He struck out the side in the second inning for his fifth consecutive strikeout and sixth of eight batters. The freshman had a rough two innings following with three walks, three hits and four runs scored for Greenville.
Fontbonne rebounded in their bottom half of the fourth. The Griffins led off with two walks and a sacrifice bunt, which allowed a run to score on a groundout by Steve Belovich.
Zach Carel was hit by a pitch for runners on the corners when freshman Jackson Penrod singled to left and scored Shuff. Fontbonne trailed just 4-2 until Montgomery hit his second home run of the night, another two-run shot, this time to center that increased the score-gap. Greenville added an additional run in the eighth to lead 7-2.
Greenville played through the top of the ninth but the game was halted with a lightning delay before the Griffins were able to step to the plate. After 15 minutes of waiting, the game was called due to the incoming storm. The game then reverted back to the score at the end of the eighth inning.
Montgomery went four-of-four at the plate with three RBI's for Greenville. For Fontbonne, Mueth and Penrod each went two-of-three in the nightcap with Mueth also walking and Penrod doubling.
