St. Louis, Mo. - Fontbonne University baseball dropped their ninth game of the season in today's Wydown Showdown against Washington University of St. Louis. The Griffins, who are now 1-9 on the season, fell 10-2 against WashU. The Bears are now 5-3 on the season and have only lost one of their last five games, despite dropping out of this week's D3baseball.com's top 25 rankings.
Fontbonne scored first in the third inning. Ethan Boyer hit for two runs batted in after Ethan Borrowman and Jonathan Hoevelmann each singled. The Griffins led 2-0 before WashU took the lead 3-2 in the bottom frame. The Griffins failed to secure any further runs while the Bears added seven more. Hoevelmann tallied three stolen bases on the day.
Logan Mueth walked twice and even took an extra base in the sixth as ball four was a wild pitch. In the bottom of the eighth, a throwing error allowed the first batter to reach first. That error would come back to haunt the Griffins. The next two batters would get out, but the Bears reached their 10th run later in the inning, which would have been negated without the throwing error.
Freshman Luke Summers suffered the loss after allowing four runs on five hits and three walks. Cole Lankford relieved Summers and he struck out two Bears after facing eight, including a bases-loaded strikeout to end the third inning. Jordan Throgmorton and Joey Clemente each struck out one batter.
Fontbonne committed four errors in the loss while WashU tallied five doubles and a two-run home run. The Bears out-hit the Griffins 11-5.
Fontbonne has a schedule change and hosts Elmhurst College on Friday in a doubleheader which starts at 11am at Shaw Park.
