Griffins run-rule Iowa Wesleyan 18-6 to win the divisional series
Fontbonne combined for 22 hits which included five doubles and three home runs as the Griffins collected 17 RBI in their victory over the Tigers.
Mount Pleasant, Iowa - Fontbonne University baseball defeated Iowa Wesleyan 18-6 in eight-innings Sunday afternoon to take the series 2-1. Fontbonne is 13-19 overall and 8-7 in conference play.
Fontbonne started their scoring early as the Griffins hit back-to-back home runs from Ethan Boyer and Ben Greenway on the team's way to a 4-0 lead after two doubles scored two more runs.
Iowa Wesleyan answered with four runs themselves in the bottom half of the first inning on two singles and a two-run home run.
After four scoreless inning, Fontbonne knotched a lone run in the sixth after Golich singled, stole second, went to third on a Tiger error and scored on a wild pitch.
Holding a 5-4 advantage, Fontbonne erupted in the seventh inning by crossing the plate 10 times to take a 15-4 lead. Those runs came on eight hits, a sacrifice bunt, walk and another error by Iowa Wesleyan. The final hit of the inning was a three-run home run by Jonathan Hoevelmann, the first of his collegiate career.
Westminster didn't want to end the game too early as they plated two runs to keep the game going, but the Griffins scored three runs in the top of the eighth to take the 18-6 lead off two doubles, two singles and a walk.
During the game, Logan Mueth and Ethan Borrowman both went two-for-three on the day, scored twice and earned a walk. Mueth also added two RBI. Greenway went two-for-five with a double, home run, three runs scored, two RBI and a walk.
Beck earned the win after striking out four Tigers over six innings. The Griffins' pitching staff struck out 10 Tigers in the game including three each by Michael Pucket Jr. and Brett Lange who only pitched one inning each.
Fontbonne's 22 hits in the game ties for second highest all season. Their 17 RBI is second-most all year as well. The combination of five team doubles and three home runs is the first for the Griffins this season.
Fontbonne hosts Principia in a doubleheader on Tuesdsay, April 25 starting at 6:30 p.m.
