Griffins Score Season-High 19 Runs In Win Over Aurora

The Griffins (5-5), totaled a season-high 19 runs on 22 hits and saw 11 players have at least one hit. At the leadoff spot, Michael Golich extended his hitting streak out to four after going 4-for-5 with three runs scored and a season-high four RBI.
Jackson Penrod also hit safely in four straight games as he went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Ryan Schocker added three hits and three RBI, while Evan Siegler went 2-for-4 with three RBI. At the bottom of the order, Matt Tossick, Deiydon Rushing, Braedon Dobbs and Luke Summers combined to go 6-for-16 with eight runs scored.
On the bump, Brett Lange got the win out of the pen, tossing 4.1 innings of scoreless ball and struck out five.
Aurora, meanwhile, scattered 13 hits of its own. The No. 4-7 hitters in Paul Dobravec, Cole Davis, Jett Wetekind and AJ Gill had at least one hit and two RBI each.
The Spartans pitching had its struggles throughout the day. Starter Carter Turnquist was dealt the loss as he went 1.2 innings, allowing eight runs (seven earned) on nine hits.
In the first, Penrod and Shocker both reached base on one out singles. After a passed ball, Siegler brought Penrod home on a RBI single to make it 1-0.
In the home half, though the Spartans answered. Austin Wiskow and Davis Purviance both walked with one away. Then, Dobravec doubled to center, scoring Austin to tie the game. Davis followed with a single to left, plating Davis to make it 2-1.
Wetekind cleared the bases with a two RBI triple and now it was a 4-1 outing. The Spartans added another run on sacrifice-fly to lead, 5-1.
In the top half of the second, the Griffins bats took over. After two singles and a walk, the bases were loaded for Golich. He singled to right, scoring Rushing and Dobbs to narrow it down to 5-3.
Jonathan Hoevelmann ripped a single of his own, plating Luke Summers. Two batters later, Shocker hit the fifth single of the inning and that scored Hoevelmann to tie the game.
Siegler added two RBI to his day after Shocker with a double, clearing the bases and that put Fontbonne ahead, 7-5. The Griffins plated two more runs and took a 9-5 lead.
From there on, they added one in the third, three in the fourth, four in the fifth and two in the seventh to lead, 19-5. The Spartans scored four runs in the ninth, but Cole Lankford closed the door on Aurora's offense and secured the win.
The team has an off day tomorrow and will return to the diamond on Thursday against Montclair St. First-pitch at 8:30 a.m.
