ST. LOUIS, Mo.—Behind Luke Summers pitching gem, the Fontbonne University baseball team swept past Iowa Wesleyan on Sunday, 6-1.
Summers, a St. Louis, Missouri, native, cruised through the Tigers lineup in 7.0 innings as he allowed just three hits and struck out a season-high 12 to pick up his seventh win.
Offensively, the team scored early and often in the first two innings. Ryan Schocker led with a 3-for-4 one run scored and one RBI performance. Michael Puckett Jr., went 2-for-4 with a run scored and a game-high two RBI, while Gus Purschke, Matt Tossick and Michael Golich added two hits and an RBI each.
Iowa Wesleyan (6-29; 0-19 SLIAC), scattered five hits and they were paced by Chazz Brown in the No. 2 slot going 2-for-3 with an RBI. After allowing five runs in the first two innings, Tigers starter Stephen Larson settled in and got through 7.0 innings of work.
In the first, Golich extended his hit streak out to 13 with a single to left. He raced around home on Purschke's gap double to left-center. Two batters later, Puckett Jr., singled to third and Purschke scored to make it 2-0.
Schocker, who was the hero yesterday in game one, picked up right where he left off with a double to left-center, allowing Dobbs to come on in and score. In the second, the team tacked on two more runs on an RBI sacrifice-fly from Penrod and Puckett Jr., single to left.
That was more than enough for Summers, including going through the Tigers lineup in order through the fifth, sixth and seventh innings.
Each team added an RBI in the eighth and Lange came on in the ninth to finish off the outing for the five-run victory.
The team continues its home swing this Wednesday night against Blackburn in a make-up game. First-pitch will be thrown at 6:45 p.m., from Shaw Park.
