How It Happened
The scoring frenzy got started in the home half of the first for the Griffins. Jackson Penrod and Braeden Dobbs both reached base on consecutive errors with two outs. That prolonged the inning enough for Lance Chapman to hammer a 3-run shot to left, his second on the year, to make it a 3-0 outing.
In the third, the Griffins plated two more. Gus Purschke started it off with a one out single and he raced home on Penrod's RBI double to put them on top 4-0. Dobbs followed with an RBI single of his own to give Fontbonne a commanding 5-0 advantage.
The team went on to score five more in the fifth to own a 10-0 advantage. The Eagles got one of those runs back in the sixth, but Fontbonne answered with three in the bottom half to take a 13-1 lead.
In the seventh, the Eagles trimmed the deficit a bit scoring four runs on zero hits to cut it down to 13-5. However, Fontbonne sparked the mercy-rule in the home half scoring two runs on one hit for the win.
