Griffins Collect Sweep Over Highlanders, Summers Sets Single-Season Record In Wins

ST. LOUIS, Mo.—The Fontbonne University baseball team won its third straight and sixth out of the last seven after sweeping past MacMurray 4-2 in game one and 3-2 in the finale. Also, Luke Summers broke a 16-year single-season record in wins at Fontbonne as he picked up his ninth win on the year. The previous mark of eight was set back in 2003 by John Morgan.

Game One

Score: Fontbonne 4, MacMurray 2

How It Happened

In the first, the Griffins jumped out to a 1-0 lead on Braeden Dobbs' RBI groundout. The Highlanders plated two runs in the top of the second, but the Griffins answered in the bottom half.

Matt Tossick led off with a hit-by-pitch and went on to steal second. The senior stole third and was able to score home on a wild throw by the catcher to tie the game.

In the third, Gus Purschke led off with a one out walk. After a balk and a passed ball, he scored on Jackson Penrod's RBI single up the middle. The team tacked on another run in the fifth and that was more than enough with Summers on the mound as Fontbonne went on for the two-run win.

• Summers earned his ninth win on the year and struck out 11 in his complete game outing.
• Offensively, Jonathan Hoevelmann, Purschke, Penrod, Dobbs, and Tossick all contributed one hit.

MacMurray Notables

• Tanner Coleman fell to 0-5 in 2019 after allowing two earned runs and striking out six in 4.0 innings pitched.
• Hayden Radford, Tanner Coleman, Wyatt Logsdon, and Bryce Griebler contributed one hit.

Game Two

Score: Fontbonne 3, MacMurray 2

Records: Fontbonne (23-9; 10-6 SLIAC), MacMurray (7-24; 3-11 SLIAC)

How It Happened

After the Griffins grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first, the team extended its advantage out to 2-0 in the next half inning.

Tyler Chambliss hit a one out double and was able to score on Hoevelmann's RBI double. The Highlanders trimmed the deficit down to 3-2 in the fifth, but Matt Manint followed in the bottom of the inning with an RBI double that scored Tyler Grimes, who reached base on a two out single, to give them some breathing room at 4-2.

In the eighth, the Highlanders already scored one run on an RBI double from Mason Hale. Later in the inning, the bases were loaded and with one away Mike Jaccobson was called out of the pen.

The reliever got Wyatt Logsdon to strikeout and Nick Martin to ground into a fielder's choice to end the threat. MacMurray got the tying run on in the ninth, though Jacobson was able to get out of the inning and secure the save.

Fontbonne Notables

• After getting hit by a line drive on the leg in the first, Jake Jump battled through the next 6.0 innings, allowing just one run on four hits and struck out six.
• Jacobson earned his third save after striking out two.
• Purschke and Manint tied with two hits each.
• Hoevelmann, Michael Puckett, Jr., and Manint had the RBI.

MacMurray Notables

• Anthony Clark fell to 2-6 on the season as he allowed three runs on six hits in 5.0 innings.
• Hale and Griebler added an RBI each.

Up Next

• The Griffins will now get ready for a key three-game series this weekend against rival Webster. On Saturday, the two teams will square off for a DH at GCS Ballpark starting at 5 p.m. On Sunday, the Gorloks will head over to Shaw Park for one game at 1 p.m.
