SEWANEE, Tenn.—The Fontbonne University baseball team closed out its trip to Tennessee in tough fashion falling 16-5 (7 inn.) against Sewanee.
The Griffins struck early in the first with Colby Shivers getting things started with a single to left. Later in the inning, Gavin Kinworthy came through with his first collegiate RBI to bring home Shivers.
Fontbonne made it 2-0 in the second when Eric Creech singled to center allowing Thomas Purshcke, who reached base on a one out single, to score.
The Tigers got one of those runs back in the second and in the third scored five runs on four hits highlighted by Jack Roode's three-run homer giving them a 6-2 lead.
Fontbonne responded scoring three runs on two hits in the fourth with Helm capping the inning off with a two RBI single to center cutting the deficit down to 6-5.
However, the Tigers scored one in the fourth and fifth, three in the sixth, and five in the seventh for the mercy-run rule win.
