Blake Welch's 26 points leads Fontbonne to their 1st win of the season
St. Louis- The Blackburn College Beavers fell prey to the Fontbonne University Griffins men's basketball team's first win of the season today. The Griffins defeated the Beavers 81-68. Fontbonne is 1-5 on the season and 1-0 in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC). Blackburn falls to 0-7 overall and 0-2 in the SLIAC.
Fontbonne barely led going into the locker room 38-35. The Griffins' 68% shooting from the field and 66% shooting from the line gave them the edge during the 2nd half to walk away with the win. Fontbonne took advantage of Blackburn's 21 turnovers, recording 11 steals during the game to propel their offensive energy.
The Griffins received an outstanding performance from freshman Blake Welch. Welch scored a career high 26 points on the night, draining 5 3-pointers in the 1st half and one in the 2nd. Freshman Richard Dorhauer scored 12 points on the night and sophomore Greg Gentry added 10 for the Griffins.
Two Blackburn players recorded double-digit scoring. Brandon Adams recorded 18 points and grabbed 7 rebounds while Jon Griffel scored 12 points for the Beavers.
