Griffins still looking to add win against aggressive non-conference opponents
St. Louis- Tonight's aggressive, quick, full-court pressing action went in favor of the Augustana College Vikings. Fontbonne's men's basketball fell 65-79. Fontbonne falls to 1-7 on the season and is looking for their first win against non-conference opponents.
With the score 16-10, Augustana, with 13:50 left in the first half, both teams would remain scoreless for the next three minutes until Augustana's Tayvian Johnson scored on a jumpshot. The Vikings would go on an 8-point run until Fontbonne freshman Blake Welch connected with his own jumpshot. Fontbonne pulled to within 8 once again, but would go into the locker room trailing 28-43.
Augustana's biggest lead was 22 points with 8 minutes remaining in the game. Fontbonne was able to come back to within 13, but time ran out before the Griffins could post a come-from-behind victory.
Welch finished the night with a Griffin-high 16 points off the bench, going 4-10 from the field and 6-6 from the line. Freshman Richard Dorhauer connected on 4-3pointers, finishing the night with 14 points while fellow freshmen Darius Rucker and Colton Woods each connected for 10 points. Rucker grabbed 6 rebounds and Woods added another 5 to help the Griffin defense.
Four of Augustana's five starters scored in double digits tonight. Viking Brandon Kunz scored 22 points connecting 9 of 12 shots from the field. Kunz was also 4 for 6 from the line. Right behind Kunz was Ben Ryan shooting 8 of 11 field goals and grabbing 9 rebounds, narrowly missing a double-double.
The Griffins travel to Florida next week for some holiday action at the Daytona Beach Shootout. The Griffins next home game they will take on SLIAC foe Westminster on Wednesday, January 2nd at 8pm.
