Westminster outshoots Fontbonne despite Griffins' 19-0 2nd half run
St. Louis- Westminster's Joe Prophet nets 24 points as the Griffins fall 55-73. Fontbonne falls to 6th in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (4-5 record) with 7 conference matchups to go. Westminster sits in the #3 slot along with Webster and MacMurray, all of which are 6-3 in SLIAC play.
The Griffins had jumped out to an early 5-0 lead when the Blue Jays immediately answered back scoring the next 6 points. Westminster would go on a 17-5 (31-10) run over the Griffins in the span of 7 minutes.
Fontbonne decreased the gap scoring 7 consecutive points. Westminster walked into the locker room with confidence with their 44-23 lead at the half.
With 8:30 remaining in the game, Westminster leading by 30, the Griffins mounted for a comeback going on a 19-0 run to the surprise of Blue Jay fans. The final 12 points of the run were all 3-pointers.
Fontbonne was able to outscore Westminster in the second half, 32-29, but their 21 point 1st half deficit was too big to crawl back from.
Sophomore Greg Gentry scored the most points for Fontbonne, finishing the night with 10.
Fontbonne is at home this Saturday to take on the Spalding University Eagles. The basketball coaches will be wearing sneakers as the team promotes Coaches vs. Cancer Suits and Sneakers weekend. Tip-off is slated for 3pm.
