Men's Basketball Falls in Season Opener to Hendrix
St. Louis- Washington U's neutral court didn't give way to the Griffins tonight as Fontbonne men's basketball lost to Hendrix 88-80 in their 2013-2014 season opener.
A tight game at the beginning, slowed by fouls, the Griffins saw Hendrix running away with an 18-point 34-16 lead with seven minutes remaining in the first half. After a Jared Greenlee made jumper and Hendrix timeout, the Griffins went on an 11-0 run in four minutes to cut the Warrior lead down to 37-29. At the end of the half, Fontbonne was trailing 41-32.
Fans enjoyed the action-filled second half. The Griffins came out of the locker room scoring the first seven points as they went on a 14-5 run to pull within one point (46-45) of the Warriors' lead. With the score tied at 48, then 50, sophomore Richard Dorhauer nailed a three-point bucket to give the Griffins their second lead of the game (53-52). A good bucket by each team evened the score once again. Hendrix would lead by 10 with 35 seconds remaining (83-73). Fontbonne freshman Kody Ettinger didn't have enough time left in the game to bring the Griffins back as he scored the final seven Griffin points in 40 seconds of play.
Fontbonne's first lead scorer of the season was Greenlee, totaling 18 points on 7 field goals and was 4-8 from the line. Greenlee also held the game-high 11 rebounds on the evening. Ettinger scored 12 points and grabbed 5 rebounds in 17 minutes off the bench. Sophomore Darius Rucker scored 12 points and 5 rebounds as well. He too was off the bench. Fellow sophomore Blake Welch accumulated 12 points and was 6-6 from the line.
Hendrix's Colton Primm scored the game-high 19 points. Starters Alec Conard and Luke Vance raked in 17 points apiece and Jordan Barrett finished off the Warrior-clad double digit scoring with 13 points.
