Tough Two-Point Loss to Spalding
St. Louis- Fontbonne University men's basketball fell to Spalding University on Satuday 68-66. This marks the fifth straight loss for the Griffins, who are now 1-9 on the season. The win continues Spalding's undefeated SLIAC record, putting the Golden Eagles at 3-0 on the season.
Spalding led 15-9 with 12 minutes to go in the first half before Fontbonne hit the court with a 10-0 run for a 20-15 advantage. At halftime the Griffins led 37-29. The Griffins held a 15-point advantage over the Golden Eagles with 4:47 minutes left in the game. Spalding ignited their offense, scoring 16 straight points to lead 66-65 with 36 seconds remaining. Jared Greenlee's made free throw tied the game at 66 before Spalding's William Barber jumper was good with four seconds left to end the game.
Four griffins posted double-digits in the two-point loss. Darius Rucker and Richard Dorhauer each posted season-highs of 15 and 13 points respectively. Also contributing offensively were Bryan DeGeare (13pts) and Greenlee (11pts). Rucker also posted the game-high 8 rebounds.
For Spalding, Thomas Blakemore scored the game-high 16 points with double-digit contributions from Barber (12) and Quayshaun Hamilton (10).
Fontbonne's contest at Iowa Wesleyan scheduled for Tuesday, January 7 has been postponed due to weather and road conditions. A reschedule date has not been determined. The Griffins are scheduled to host Greenville College at 8pm this Thursday, January 9th.
