Another Close Game Ends too Quickly for Griffins
St. Louis-The Fontbonne University men's basketball team slips to 1-3 in conference play as Greenville holds on for an 81-76 win. The Panthers climb above .500 after tonight's game.
A back and forth first half turned in favor of Fontbonne when the Griffins went on an 11-3 run for their largest lead of the game with seven minutes left in the first half (32-23). Greenville turned around and scored 12 points before the end of the half, while Fontbonne sank just three free throws. All even at 35 at halftime, both teams looked to take a second-half advantage.
Greenville came out of the locker room scoring a 9-3 run to lead 44-38. The Griffins found themselves down by two with eight minutes remaining. Seven unanswered Panther points gave Greenville the edge, and with 2:22 left, Fontbonne trailed by ten. Six unanswered Griffin Points made the score 74-70 Greenville, with just under a very long minute left to play. Consistent free throw shooting eventually completed the win for the Panthers.
For Greenville, Ron Harris scored the game-high 19 points followed immediately by Alex Mumphard with 18 points and five assists. Tim Daniel was the final Panther to score ten or more points, finishing the night with 12.
Fontbonne's Darius Rucker tops his season-high by one points, scoring 16 points on the night, sinking six of ten field goal attempts. Jared Greenlee finished the long, foul-filled night with 14 points and four assists. Greenlee missed just one field goal (4-5) and sunk six free throws.
The Griffins travel to Eureka College this Saturday for a 3pm tipoff with the SLIAC foe.
