Welch Leads Griffins Past Eureka
St. Louis- After over a week of gameless basketball, sophomore Blake Welch connected on his first five of seven attempts to score all of Fontbonne's 13 points for a 13-2 lead over the Eureka College Red Devils with 10 minutes left in the first half. Fontbonne defeated the Red Devils 80-47 and are now 5-6 in conference play.
Fontbonne continued to power past Eureka shooting over 40% in the field and behind the arc while the Red Devils averaged 28% overall and just 10% from long range. Welch totaled 16 points before the Griffins walked into the locker room with a 36-23 lead.
Fontbonne continued to press into the second half, forcing several 10-second backcourt turnovers for Eureka. Jared Greenlee and Darius Rucker were threats inside on the boards out of the locker room.
Welch finished the game with 23 points, shooting three for four behind the arc and 8-12 overall. Greenlee finished with the game-high 11 rebounds, 10 of which were defensive. Rucker ended his night with 10 boards.
Seth Wickert scored 10 points for the Red Devil high while Sam James posted nine points and eight rebounds.
Eureka shot just 27.2% from the field while Fontbonne finished at 44.6% from the field and 50% from three-point range.
Fontbonne hosts Westminster College this Saturday, February 8th at 3pm.
