Griffins win first SLIAC contest
Elsah, Ill. - Fontbonne University men's basketball opened St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play with a 80-65 win over Principia College. The win marks the first for the 2014-15 season.
With the game tied 10-10, Fontbonne posted nine unanswered points to lead 19-10 with 13:23 left in the first half and continued to chip away at the Panthers. At halftime Fontbonne led 40-29.
After two made Panther free throws, the Griffins led 47-39 with 14:50 on the clock. Fontbonne scored nine straight points once again to stretch their lead to 56-39 before ultimately winning.
Blake Welch totaled 20 points as he scored four treys on five attempts and was 7-9 overall in the field. Welch also collected five rebounds and two steals. Jared Greenlee narrowly missed a double-double with his 19 points and nine rebounds. Greenlee went 5-6 at the free throw line while adding two assists, two blocks and two steals.
Parker Davidson scored 19 points with 13 rebounds for Principia while Justin Ball toalled 22 points, nine rebounds and eight blocks.
Fontbonne travels to Eureka for an 8pm SLIAC game this Friday, December 5th and takes on Augustana College (Ill.) in Rock Island on Saturday at 7pm.
