Webster hands Fontbonne first loss in six games
St. Louis, Mo. - Webster University got the better end of the Griffins tonight in the Battle of Big Bend. The Gorloks walked away with a 71-57 win, strengthening their run for a fifth place St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference title.
Fontbonne held a 12-11 lead at the beginning of the game, but the Gorloks scored eight unanswered points and led for the remainder of the contest. The Griffins pulled to within one point with 6:53 to play in the first half, then went on a 12-3 run to pull away. At halftime, Webster led 37-28.
Trailing 50-39 with 11:50 left on the clock, Fontbonne posted 11 points to Webster's two, to pull within two points of the Gorloks. A minute later Webster nailed a three-pointer and a free throw for some breathing room of six points when Jared Greenlee sunk a layup. Webster led 56-52 with six minutes to go when they eight straight points to lead 64-52 with just under two minutes of play left. The Griffins scored five points to pull within seven of the Gorloks, but only a minute was left in the game. An offensive foul on the Griffins gave Webster possession with 47 seconds left and untimately the win.
For Webster, Hunter Ward connected on five of his nine trey attempts for a total of 21 points. Ahmad Smith was 8-for-15 on the night with 20 points.
For the Griffins Greenlee led with 11 points and six rebounds. Darius Rucker secured 12 points off the bench going 5-for-7 in the field.
Fontbonne travels to Iowa Wesleyan this Saturday, February 14th for a matchup with the Tigers. Tipoff is scheduled for 3 p.m.
