Missed free throws hand Griffins overtime loss to Iowa Wesleyan
Mount Pleasant, Iowa - A nine-point Griffin second-half lead was spoiled, sending Fontbonne and Iowa Wesleyan into overtime. The Griffins led 61-57 with 26 seconds left in the game when the Tigers connected on a three-pointer to trail by one point with 18 seconds left. An Iowa Wesleyan foul sent the Griffins to the free throw line with nine seconds left. Fontbonne missed the first one but made the second, for a two-point lead. The Tigers tied the game with two seconds left to send the game into overtime.
Buckets were exchanged by both teams back and forth. Iowa Wesleyan secured a 69-67 lead with one minute left in overtime. The Tigers blocked Fontbonne's next shot attempt but ended up fouling with five seconds left. Fontbonne had the chance to tied the game to force a second overtime, but the Griffins missed both free throws.
Overall, Iowa Wesleyan's Chris Fowler accumulated 30 points, five rebounds, four steals, four assists and two blocked shots on the night.
For the Griffins, Jared Greenlee totaled 15 points and eight rebounds, scoring five of nine shot attempts. Blake Welch's hands were hot once again as the junior secured 20 points going six-for-six from the free throw line. Ben Kissing tallied nine points with eight rebounds while Darius Rucker secured 10 points off the bench.
Fontbonne travels to Fulton, Mo. to take on the Westminster College Blue Jays this Wednesday. Tipoff is scheduled for 8 p.m.
