Men's Basketball holds on for the win over Westminster
Fulton, Mo. - Fontbonne men's basketball held a 43-26 halftime advantage and held on for the 86-80 win over Westminster College last night, keeping their SLIAC postseason hopes alive. The Griffins are now 10-13 overall and 9-7 in conference play.
Fontbonne jumped out to a 10-2 lead and leading 12-6 scored six unanswered points for a 12-point lead and led by 16 points with 8:36 remaining before the break.
The Griffins led by 20 points with 9:22 left to play in the game when Westminster started crawling back. The Blue Jays outscored the Griffins 28-14 in the final nine minutes of play but ran out of time for the comeback win.
Fontbonne's Richard Dorhauer scored 14 points in 17 minutes of action. The sophomore recorded perfect shooting on the night going 2-for-2 from three-point range and 4-for-4 overall while sinking all four of his free throw attempts. Darius Rucker recorded the only double-double on the night with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Forward Jared Greenee's 11 points and five rebounds helped the Griffins secure their win as did Orkan Bakis' 11 points. Bakis was 4-for-5 on the night draining all three of his attempts from long range. Garrett McDowell was on fire beyond the arc too, scoring three treys on four tries.
Westminster's Tanner Cochran scored the game-high 20 points while shooting a perfect 9-for-9 from the charity stripe.
Fontbonne has two regular season games left and will host MacMurray College this Saturday, February 21st at 3 p.m. The Griffins will honor senior Evan Johnson as well as juniors Blake Welch and Darius Rucker.
