Griffins earn Coach Thornhill his first career win in game one of 2015-16
St. Louis, Mo. - With 17 minutes left to play, Fontbonne men's basketball trailed by 11 points before gaining the lead and staying on top to defeat Morthland College 84-73. The Griffins have tallied their first win of 2015 in grand fashion as first-year head coach Lance Thornhill earned his first career win.
Fontbonne trailed 9-0, forcing an early timeout when they were down 10 points with two minutes left in the first half. Two Griffin three-pointers cut Fontbonne's deficit to four at halftime. Fontbonne trailed 46-35 with 17 minutes remaining when the Griffins' offense scored seven straight points to cut Morthland's lead to four. A little back and forth play occurred before Fontbonne's Richard Dorhauer netted a trey and the Griffins gained the 58-55 lead with 10 minutes left to hold on for the remainder of the game. In six minutes, Dorhauer and Kody Ettinger combined for 18 points including four treys.
Ettinger totaled 21 points while going 5-for-7 beyond the arc. Greg Gentry recorded 16 points and four assists while Dorhauer tallied 15 points and four rebounds.
The Griffins head over to the University of Missouri-St. Louis Wednesday for a 7 p.m. contest against the Division II Tritons.
