Fourteen-point run propels Griffins to victory over Concordia Chicago
St. Louis, Mo. - Fontbonne University men's basketball led Concordia of Chicago (CUC) 54-47 at halftime and scored the first two buckets of the second half before stalling out. CUC then trailed by three (60-63) when the Griffins netted 14 consecutive points to distance themselves with a 77-60 advantage. After a bucket from CUC, Fontbonne scored five more points for a 20-point lead and hung on for their second win of the season.
The Griffins were ahead 19 points with 8:30 to play when CUC started inching their way back into the game. CUC cut the lead to ten points with 1:46 remaining while free throws allowed the Griffins to gain a little cushion back. Eventually two three-pointers for CUC pulled the Cougars within seven with 42 seconds left, but the Griffins closed out with three free-throws.
After Fontbonne forward Jared Greenlee came out of the game on an injury a few minutes into the game, Ben Kissing stepped up his game down low and outside finishing the afternoon with 27 points, 11 rebounds, four assists, two steals and a block. Kissing's second-half surge included 19 points connecting on all three attempted three-pointers and while going six-for-seven in the field in the second half overall.
Also everywhere on the court was junior Richard Dorhauer and freshman Trey Watkins. Dorhauer netted 16 points, six rebounds, five assists and one steal while Watkins tallied 13 points, five rebounds, three assists and three steals. Freshman Bryce Zimmerman did his job on the boards, going six-for-seven overall with 12 points and seven rebounds. Also scoring double-digits for Fontbonne was Tyler Williams (14 points) while Greg Gentry maneuvered his way around the court with eight points and six assists.
The Griffins had to contain Kylan Anderson all game. The point-guard led both teams with 28 points and five assists in the contest while Mitch Pelissier tallied 23 points, seven rebounds and six assists for the Cougars.
Thirty of Fontbonne's points came off free throws while the Griffins held a 7% FG advantage over the Cougars. Fontbonne also out-rebounded CUC 46-35.
Fontbonne opens St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play Wednesday, December 2nd against Blackburn College at 6 p.m.
