Ettinger's 32 points not enough as Griffins fall to WashU 74-69
St. Louis, Mo. - Fontbonne men's basketball put on a show tonight against the Washington University Bears. The Griffins forced WashU to turn the ball over on their first two possessions. The Griffins, who trailed by 13 points, posted a 14-3 run in the final four and a half minutes of the first half to pull within two of the No. 21-ranked Bears going into the break. Fontbonne tied the game 40-40 with 14:38 to play after Kody Ettinger put in his layup plus extra point on the foul. It was the closest the Griffins would get as WashU hung on for their eighth win of the season.
Ettinger came off the bench after forward Ben Kissing got into foul trouble early and recorded 13 points in 11 minutes in the first half. The sophomore went on to total a career-high 32 points while draining six of nine three-point attempts and added four rebounds as well. Richard Dorhauer tallied the Griffins' only other double-digit scoring (13) with five rebounds. Forward Jared Greenlee and guard Trey Watkins each brought down six rebounds.
Overall, Fontbonne out-shot WashU 33.3%-18.8% from long range. The Bears blocked six Griffin shots with Clinton Hooks recording four on his own as he recorded 18 points and 12 rebounds as well. Andrew Sanders recorded WashU's high scoring with 21 points.
The Griffins do not compete again until they host Westminster College on January 2nd. Tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m.
