WashU roars back from six-point deficit

St. Louis, Mo. - Fontbonne University men's basketball surrended a 32-26 lead to the No. 13 - ranked Washington University in St. Louis Bears tonight. WashU is now 6-1 on the season while the Griffins fall to 1-4.

Fontbonne jumped out to a 6-0 lead after two treys but the hosts responded with seven unanswered points and the two teams exchanged leads until Fontbonne senior Dallas Haywood nailed a three-pointer to give his team a 21-19 lead nine minutes into the game.

The Griffins led 32-26 with 6:51 to go in the first half when WashU went on a scoring frenzy. The Bears netted 13 points before the Griffins secured a free throw and then scored an additional 13 more before senior Orkan Bakis connected on a trey to close out the half. WashU led 52-36 at the break.

WashU continued to increase their lead throughout the second half and forced the Griffins to commit 20 turnovers in the game. Overall Fontbonne scored 11 three-point conversions as WashU netted 10 of their own, but dominated in accuracy, shooting 52.6% from long range compared to Fontbonne's 39.6%.

Coming off an injury and in just his second varsity game of the season, senior Kody Ettinger scored Fontbonne's game-high of 14 points. The shooting guard recorded 11 of those in the first half and went five-of-five at the charity stripe with three treys on the night. Leading the forwards on the blocks was senior Jeff Smith with nine rebounds.

Fontbonne is back in action at home this Saturday, December 10th in a SLIAC matchup against Blackburn at 3 p.m.
