Eureka, Ill. - A month after their only win of the season, Fontbonne men's basketball suffered a 98-78 loss at Eureka College tonight.
Fontbonne led 17-13 midway through the first half when Eureka scored 10 unanswered points to take and maintain the lead for the remainder of the contest. The Griffins cut the Red Devils' lead to four with 1:38 left to play in the first half on a Kris McCann three-pointer but Eureka led 43-36 at the half.
Fontbonne trailed by 10 with 9:55 to play after freshman Anthony Loper netted two free throws. Eureka responded by scoring nine unanswered points as they went on to win their eighth game of the year. The Red Devils are now 3-1 in conference play while the Griffins slip to 1-4.
Senior Jeff Smith led Fontbonne with 14 points, connecting on seven of nine shots. He also brought down five board. Junior Jack Lake scored all 12 of his points in the first half after going six-for-seven. He finished the game six-for-nine.
As a team, the Griffins shot 45.3% from the floor however the Red Devils counteracted by shooting 53.1% and made 23 of 26 free throw attempts.
Fontbonne returns to St. Louis and hosts Principia College at 3 p.m. this Saturday, January 7th.
