CHICAGO, Ill.—The Fontbonne University men's basketball team dropped its first game on the season against Marian on Friday night, 105-57 to open the Moody Bible Tournament.
The Griffins (1-1), shot 42.9 percent from the floor and 42.1 percent from beyond-the-arc. Jared Woodcock led with a game and season-high 24 points on 7-of-11 shooting. Luke DeLine was the final player in double-figures with 14.
Marian (5-0), shot an impressive 60.9 percent from the field, connected on 50.0 percent (11-of-22) of its shots from downtown, outrebounded the Griffins 35-18, and its bench came through with 35 total points.
Sterling Brown led the Knights with a team-high 22 points on 7-of-13 shooting. Wes Stowers added 20, while TJ Henderson and Luke Gohmann scored 13 and 11, respectively.
In the first, the Knights jumped out to a 14-2 lead at the 13:16 mark on a TJ Henderson 3-pointer. Later in the half, the Griffins got it down to 25-16 after Woodcock made both of his free throws.
However, the Knights closed out the final minutes on a 20-9 run to take a 44-25 advantage after 20:00 minutes of play.
In the second, despite the Griffins shooting 57.9 percent (11-of-19), the Knights went 26-of-35 (74.3 percent) from the floor and outscored Fontbonne 61-32 for the 48-point win.
The team returns to action tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m., against host Moody Bible.
