How It Happened
In the first half, a made 3-pointer from Cody McKinney had the Griffins out in front at the 8:32 mark, 22-19. The two teams traded lead changes but the Griffins still led 31-26 on Elijah Rice's free throw with 3:19 remaining.
After a 3-point play by Webster, the Griffins answered with Anthony Jones connecting on a 3-point play of his own to keep Fontbonne ahead 34-29 with just under three minutes left.
The Gorloks, though closed out the half on a 7-0 run with Ethan Hughes' layup giving Webster a 36-34 advantage at the break.
Fontbonne shot 37.5 percent from the floor in the first and outrebounded the Gorloks, 24-22. Anthony Jones led the Griffins with seven points off the bench. Webster, meanwhile, shot 36.8 percent from the field and Wynne Brown, Jr., led the floor totaling 11 points.
In the second half, Noah Coddington's layup tied it up once more at 44-44 with 14:32 left in regulation. Over the next two minutes and nine seconds, the Gorloks went on an 8-0 run as Wynne Brown Jr. made his layup to give Webster the 52-44 lead.
The Griffins kept battling and got the deficit down to 65-61 on Simpson's layup at 6:14. However, the Gorloks responded with a 5-0 run and from there they were able to fend off Fontbonne for the 13-point victory.
Inside The Numbers
- The Griffins finished with a 36.1 field goal percentage and held a 49-45 advantage on the glass.
- Webster concluded the day shooting 43.2 percent from the floor.
Fontbonne Leaders
- Anthony Jones was the lone player in double-figures for Fontbonne leading with 16 points off the bench. Jones went a perfect 6-of-6 from the charity-stripe.
- Cody McKinney and Elijah Rice added nine points each.
Webster Leaders
- Rodson Etienne added 14 points in the second half to finish with a game-high 23 points on 10-of-18 shooting.
- Enrique Tankins netted 19 of his 21 points in the second half. He added nine boards, five steals, and three assists.
- Wynne Brown, Jr., was the final player in double-figures with 13 points.
