Men's Basketball Win Streak Reaches Four After Defeating Eureka
S, Mo.—The Fontbonne University men’s basketball team won its fourth straight game knocking off Eureka, 79-69. Fontbonne moves to 9-8 overall and 5-1 in the SLIAC. Eureka falls to 5-12 and 3-3 in SLIAC play.
ST. LOUIS, Mo.—The Fontbonne University men's basketball team won its fourth straight game knocking off Eureka, 79-69. Fontbonne moves to 9-8 overall and 5-1 in the SLIAC. Eureka falls to 5-12 and 3-3 in SLIAC play.
Prior to the game, the Griffins honored Caden Clark who became the 16th player in program history back on November 19th to reach 1,000 career points.
Fontbonne had three players in double-figures led by Clark with 19 points and going 11-of-14 from the line. Brent Wagner added 17 points, while Cheikh Thiam set new season-highs with 14 points and 16 rebounds.
After the Red Devils grabbed a 12-11 lead at the 13:21 mark, the Griffins went on a 9-0 run over the next five minutes leading 20-12 on Elijah Rice's layup.
Eureka battled back and eventually took a 21-20 lead with 6:39 remaining, but Fontbonne closed out the half on a 10-6 run leading 30-27 after 20:00 minutes of play.
Both teams had its struggles from the floor in the first with Eureka shooting just 29.6 percent, while Fontbonne went 12-of-39 (30.8 percent).
In the second half, the Red Devils trailed 32-31 with 17:28 remaining. Fontbonne put some distance between themselves and the Red Devils going on a 14-3 run in four minutes taking a 46-34 lead after Clark went 2-of-2 from the line.
From there, the Griffins expanded its lead out to 61-42 with 8:37 left in regulation. Fontbonne had to come through at the free throw line going 14-of-18 from the charity-stripe en route to the 10-point win.
Fontbonne shot 38.5 percent from the floor but made up for it hitting a season-high 24 free throws. The Griffins held a 42-37 advantage on the glass and forced 18 Red Devils turnovers.
