The Fontbonne University men's lacrosse team opened their 2012-2013 season on the road this weekend losing to Sewanee University 14-5.
Sewanee opened the game by grabbing a 2-0 lead in the first quarter. After a quick Sewanee goal to start the second quarter, Fontbonne senior Riley O'Neil scored at the 3:01 mark to cut Sewanee 's lead to 3-1. Sewanee however responded by scoring just 10 seconds later to build its lead to 4-1. A late second quarter goal gave Sewanee a 5-1 halftime lead.
In the third quarter, Sewanee blew the game open by taking advantage of Griffin penalities. Sewanee scored three man-up goals to begin the third quarter to take a 8-1 lead. Fontbonne senior Colin Benecke scored his first goal of the season to cut the lead to 8-2. Sewanee went right back to work scoring another man-up goal at the 6:34 mark of the third quarter. Sewanee built its lead to 9-2 before Benecke then scored his second goal of the game.
Sewanee then scored four answered goals making it 14-3 midway through the fourth quarter. Fontbonne freshman Brian Furrow scored his first career collegiate goal and Adam Walker scored his first goal of the season to round out the scoring for the game.
For the game, Fontbonne was just 1-6 on man-up situations while Sewanee was 5-7. Griffins senior goalie Chad Meurer made 18 saves in the cage for Fontbonne.
The Griffins play their home-opener this weekend on Sunday at 1:00 pm against Beloit College.
