Benecke's six goals lead Fontbonne to first win of the season
The Fontbonne University men's lacrosse team earned their first win of the 2013 season last night defeating Beloit College 10-8. The victory evened the Griffins record at 1-1.
Fontbonne scored three goals in a four minute span in the fourth quarter to propelled them to victory. Leading 7-4 heading into the final quarter, Beloit scored three unanswered goals to open the period and tie the game at 7-7. Fontbonne senior Colin Benecke then scored two goals in less than two minutes to give the Griffins a 9-7 lead. Freshman Brian Furrow scored with a 1:17 left in the game to extend Fontbonne's lead to 10-7. Beloit scored with less than a minute left but the Griffins were able to close out the game earning a 10-8 win.
For the game, Benecke scored six goals and added an assist for seven points while Furrow and Samuel Nickols scored two goals apiece. Griffin goalie Thomas Carroll recorded six saves to pick up his first victory of the season.
Fontbonne outshot Beloit 64-23 including 24-2 int the third quarter. Beloit freshman goalie Trevor Kenahan kept the game close by recording 24 saves.
Fontbonne returns to action Saturday at noon when they host Trine University.
