The Fontbonne University men's lacrosse scored two goals in the final three minutes Saturday to earn a thrilling 11-10 victory over Trine University. The win improved the Griffins overall record to 2-1.
Trailing 10-9 with under four minutes to go in the game, Fontbonne senior Tucker Nickols scored the game tying goal with 3:41 to go in the game. Fellow senior Colin Benecke assisted the Nickols goal. With 32 sseconds to play, Benecke then propelled the Griffins to victory with an unassisted goal.
Fontbonne had to fend off a late furious charge from Trine to secure the victory. Trine had a shot ring off the post with five seconds to play and then scored a goal but the referees deemed it came after time expired.
For the game, Benecke led the Griffins with five points on two goals and three assists. Senior Cameron Braun recorded a team-high three goals. Fontbonne outshot Trine 38-37 and were a perfect 8 for 8 on clear attempts. Trine stayed in the game by dominating the face-offs winning 22 of 25.
The Griffins will return to the field Wednesday night when they host DePauw University at 7 pm.
