The Fontbonne University men's lacrosse team loss their Midwest Lacrosse Conference (MLC) opener and their first home game of the season on Saturday falling to Concordia-Wisconsin University 12-9. The Griffins dropped to 4-3 overall and 0-1 in the MLC.
Concordia raced out to a 4-0 lead in the first quarter and was threating to take a 5-0 lead into halftime before the Griffins finally got on the scoreboard with a 1:54 to go in the second quarter. Senior Adam Walker scored his first of of two goals on the day right before halftime as the Griffins took some momentum into the break.
After halftime, the Griffins scored two goals in the first four minutes of the third quarter to cut Concordia's lead to 5-3. After Concordia scored a man-up goal at the 7:10 mark of the third quarter but Fontbonne responded by scoring two unanswered goals to cut their deficit to 6-5.
Over the next six minutes of the game, Concordia would six unanswered goals to take a 12-6 lead. Four of those six goals were man-up scores as Concordia took advantage of Griffin penalities. Fontbonne scored four goals, two of which were man-up, in the game's final two minutes to make things a little interesting.
For the game, freshman Brian Furrow scored a team-high four goals while senior Peter Travis had a goal and two assists. Senior goalie Chad Meurer recorded 12 saves in the cage for the Griffins.
Fontbonne will return to action Wednesday night when they host Elmhurst College at 7 pm.
