2014 Men's Lacrosse
St. Louis- Fontbonne University (FBU) men's lacrosse is off to great start this offseason. After going 8-8 for the second season in a row; the Griffins are looking to create a new era for its lacrosse team. Head Coach Mark Prey states, "It is our goal to establish this program as a contender for the Midwest Lacrosse Conference (MLC) Championship every year, leading to national recognition as a perennial threat at the NCAA Division III level. We plan to accomplish this by creating a culture that focuses on using lacrosse as an avenue for holistic personal growth as well as lacrosse players. We also will put great emphasis on how the bonds players make as teammates will aid this process."
Not only will there be a new set of coaches on the sideline, the team is full of many new faces. Only returning 3 players from the previous season, the team will be looking to its freshmen to make an immediate impact. Not only does FBU lacrosse have a roster full of students from all over the country including players from North Carolina, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, Texas, and New York, many key roles are being filled by players from our backyard. St. Louis lacrosse has been on a major upswing during the last few decades and Coach Prey looks to the local talent as a means to create a foundation for the future success of the program and the region.
The team began fall practices in September and the future is looking bright. The student-athletes have taken it upon themselves to improve the attitude of FBU lacrosse on and off the field. With a newly established minimum team GPA, it is a goal for the team to have one of the highest team GPA's on campus. "This is the reason student-athletes come to college, and I am lucky as a coach to have a group of players who have such a clear vision of their goals of academic success". Noticed throughout campus, many faculty and students have grown aware of the changes FBU lacrosse is making. Many alumni who have high interest in the team are also taking note and wish to see the program grow into a perennial powerhouse. "I am really looking forward to seeing what the future holds for the new generation of Griffin lacrosse student-athletes. They seem to be headed in the right direction, growing what we worked so hard to start", 2013 graduate, All-MLC Defender, and former team captain Mike Liebreich stated. Great things are in the works here at Fontbonne! Go Griffins!
