Men's Lacrosse Wins First Game of Season
St. Louis- The Fontbonne University Griffins picked up their first win of the season today, defeating the University of Dubuque Spartans 13-4. The Griffins gave head coach Mark Prey his first collegiate win.
First have play was neck and neck as the score was 2-2 after the first quarter. The Griffins were able to outscore Dubuque 2-1 during the second quarter, giving them a 4-3 lead at halftime.
With few substitutes for both teams, fatigue setting in, and emotions high, second half play was much more choppy with players shooting wide and passing high more often. Despite having two more minutes worth of penalties during the third quarter, the Griffins scored three goals in a row, taking a 7-3 lead before Dubuque found the back of the net.
More penalties ensued, mostly for the tired and frustrated Spartans, who were charged with nine penalties in the fourth quarter alone, with three of those being unsportsmanlike conduct. One of those unsportsmanlike penalties was the second of the game for goalkeeper Derouso Cadet, forcing equipment exchanges and sending Javez Vargas to stand in cage. Fontbonne shut out the Spartans 6-0 in the fourth quarter.
Senior Tommy Carroll recorded 14 saves in the win, taking his total on the week to 38 saves with a .745 save percentage. Brendan Friss scored four goals, one assist and picked up seven groundballs against the Spartants. Freshman Nick Athmann had three goals, three assists, and five ground balls aiding the Griffin win.
The Griffins travel to Beloit College (Wisc.) Wednesday for a weeknight matchup before returning home on Saturday to host Hendrix College (Ark.) at noon at Gay Field.
