Griffins fall short in overtime
St. Louis-The Griffins fell to the College of Mount St. Joseph (MSJ) this afternoon 8-7 in overtime.
Fontbonne men's lacrosse led 4-3 at halftime. MSJ scored two straight for a 5-4 lead before the Griffins scored three in a row to lead 7-5 over MSJ with 8:48 remaining. The Lions notched the game-tieing goal with four minutes to go in the fourth quarter. MSJ fired off seven missed shots while Fontbonne missed their two attempts before the horn sounded for end of regulation.
In overtime, an immediate Lion turnover was followed by an uncaused Fontbonne turnover. MSJ called a timeout and six seconds later John Ewing scored the game-winning goal off a right-side assist from Drew Stoffer.
Jesse Mayer scored the game-high three goals for the Lions with Mike Weil recording his first win of the season while saving 12 shots.
Fontbonne senior goaltender Tommy Carroll saved 19 shots with six groundballs. Joey Mirth scored two goals while adding three assists. Andrew Malcinski aided the defensive efforts with four caused turnovers and five groundballs for the Griffins.
Fontbonne travels to Mequon, Wisc. on Saturday, April 12th for an MLC matchup against Concordia University (Wisc.). First whistle is slated for 1pm with live stats and audio available for fans.
