Eagles freeze out Griffins in first conference game
Lisle, Ill. - Fontbonne University men's lacrosse succumbed to Benedictine University (BenU) this evening 20-1. The weather was brutal with the temperatures in the low thirties and winds from 30-40 miles per hour. At the start of the game there were even flurries in the air. The Griffins are now 1-3 on the year and 0-1 in the Midwest Lacrosse Conference. BenU
Benedictine got off to a 5-0 lead before Michael Picciolo set up Berlin Cole for the Griffins only tally of the first half. The Eagles closed out the half with 12 goals including nine in the second period. Fontbonne was held to just three shots in the first half.
The exhausted Griffins had just two subs while Benedictine had over 20 players on the sideline. Fontbonne maintained better possession in the second half as they got off nine shots in the third period and seven in the fourth, but BenU's 53-29 ground ball advantage loomed over the Griffins.
The Eagles held a 63-19 shot advantage while Jack Carroll saved a career-high 17 in net for the Griffins.
Fontbonne plays at Aurora University on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. The Griffins host Cornell College in their home opener Friday, March 10th at 7 p.m.
