Griffins tally three unassisted goals in loss against MSOE
St. Louis, Mo. - Fontbonne men's lacrosse suffered a 20-point defeat on a rainy and cloudy Saturday afternoon. The Griffins fell to MSOE 23-3 and are now 1-7 overall and 0-4 in conference.
MSOE scored at least five goals in each quarter and shutout Fontbonne in the third frame.
MSOE scored the first three goals before Brian Nguyen put Fontbonne on the scoreboard. The junior received the ball below the goal-line-extended before working his way into the front of the cage for the golden nugget.
Fontbonne's Zack Griffith dodged from the top right and bounced his third goal of the season to the left side of the cage. The goal put the score 6-2 in favor of the Raiders.
Trailing 16-3 and a man-up, junior Michael Picciolo made a nice play as MSOE tried to clear the ball. A costly turnover and Griffin fans thought their man-up opportunity was lost but Picciolo robbed the clear from the Raider goalkeeper and shot the ball straight into the open net.
MSOE would close out the game by scoring seven unanswered goals.
Fontbonne committed 27 turnovers while MSOE picked up 52 groundballs. The Griffins won just eight of 29 faceoff attempts and went 14-20 in clears. Freshman Matt Rech won five of Fontbonne's faceoffs. The Griffins scored three goals on just nine shot attempts while MSOE's 23 goals came on 63 shots.
Griffin goalkeeper Jack Carroll made 17 saves in net. Griffith scooped up a team-high five ground balls while Picciolo caused three MSOE turnovers.
Fontbonne will travel to Concordia Wisconsin for a 1 p.m. game on Saturday, April 1st.
