Men's Lacrosse recaps the 2017 season
St. Louis, Mo. - Fontbonne University men's lacrosse ended their season a couple of days sooner than expected. Storms and field availability cancelled their final home game of the season, making their contest at Monmouth on April 21st their final game of the season.
"We have to give huge thanks and the utmost praise to our students, their families, and to everyone at Fontbonne for making this season a great success," commented head coach Mark Prey. "We aimed to be positive and together throughout the year, which allowed the students to have faith, and to serve in setting a new standard for a new era of men's lacrosse here at Fontbonne.
An overtime win at Carroll College and a 21-1 victory against Westminster College highlighted the season for the Griffins. Anchoring the program was goalie Jack Carroll who made 172 saves in his first year as a Griffin, the third-most saves by any goalkeeper in the program's history. His 24 saves against Aurora is tied for third all-time with his brother Tommy and his 22 saves against Beloit is fifth in a game.
Leading Fontbonne's offense were juniors Brian Nguyen and Michael Picciolo. Nguyen's 20 points was a team-high as he tallied 11 goals and nine assists. Picciolo was even on scoring with six goals and six assists. He led the Griffins with 46 ground balls.
Sophomore defender Collin Lee edged Picciolo in caused turnovers. Lee led the Griffins with 14 on the season while Picciolo added 13 of his own.
Fontbonne had a lofty grade point average goal for the team this season and finished with a 3.07 team GPA, taking in the Division III philosophy of being a student-athlete first.
Prey is excited for the future of Fontbonne men's lacrosse, "With zero graduating students and an exciting recruiting class coming in, we are very grateful for where we are and what the future shows. Again, thank you to everyone as we look ahead to next season!"
