ST. LOUIS, Mo.—The Fontbonne University men's lacrosse team dropped a tough 12-6 outing against Dubuque on Friday night.
The Griffins (1-4), finished with 32 shots and went 13-of-18 on its clear attempts, however, they struggled at the face-off dot, winning just 8-of-20.
Individually, Cameron Director tied his season-high with three goals. Kanaan Leach, Alex Scott and Matt Rech added the other goals. In net, Nick Fresta came up with six saves.
The Spartans (3-2), meanwhile, scored six goals in the fourth to gain the victory. Playing a big role in that fourth was the duo of Michael Jango and Tanner Weis as they each netted four goals. In net, Kyle Mullins came up big quite a few times in net for Dubuque, making 14 saves.
It was a scoreless game up until the 4:50 mark, when Davis Behrns scored off an assist from Tanner Weis, making it a 1-0 game. One minute and nine seconds later, after a missed shot, Jango netted an unassisted goal, extending the advantage out to 2-0 after one.
In the second, the Griffins took advantage of a Spartans turnover as Rech found Leach and he ripped his shot past Mullins, cutting the deficit down to 2-1 at 13:45.
DU responded with an unassisted goal by Micahel Julius and he extended the lead back out to 3-1. Then, after a good clear attempt by Fontbonne, the team called a timeout. Out of the break, Director took a pass from Rech and he beat Mullins to make it 3-2.
However, with a little over two minutes left, the Griffins were called for a two-minute penalty. That proved costly with the Spartans scoring twice in that span and that pushed its lead out to 5-2 at the break.
In the third, Leach had a hard shot that was saved by Mullins, however, the net-minder was unable to corral the ball. Scott was right there, though and he picked it up to score.
For every goal the Griffins had the Spartans got one right back. At 12:27, Jango got a pass from behind the net. He raced around the Griffins defense and scored over the shoulder of Fresta, putting the Spartans back on top, 6-3.
At the 5:00 minute mark, Collin Lee forced a turnover and raced up the field with the ball. He found Director, who weaved his way past a Spartans defender and his overhanded shot got past Mullins, narrowing it down to 6-4 heading into the third.
It was all Dubuque in the fourth, though scoring six unanswered goals and they would go on for the six-goal victory.
The Griffins look to bounce back in its first MLC outing next Wednesday night. The team takes on Monmouth at 7 p.m.
