The Fontbonne University men's soccer team earned their first win of the 2012 season today defeating Rhodes College 2-0. The Griffins improved to 1-0-1 on the season.
Fontbonne jumped on Rhodes early scoring in the second minute of play. Junior Jimmy Timmerberg scored his first goal of the season off a dead ball assisted by junior Josh Schulz. The Griffins continued to press Rhodes in the first half outshooting them 8-1 but couldn't extend their lead.
In the second half, Fontbonne continued to look like the more dangerous team outshooting Rhodes 8-2 but couldn't find another goal. The Griffins insurance came in the 84th minute as senior Charlie Chafin scored his first goal of the season on an assist from junior Wesley Laney. Laney's assist was the second of the season. Fontbonne junior goalie Ryan Essenpreiss picked up his first shutout of the season.
Fontbonne returns to action Tuesday night as they host Illinois College at 9 pm at Centene Stadium in their 2012 home opener.
