The Fontbonne University men's soccer team used an early goal to help propel them to a 1-0 victory over Manchester College today. The Griffins improved to 4-0-1 on the season.
Fontbonne jumped on Manchester early, pressuring them in the Griffins attacking third. That pressure led to junior Josh Schulz's fourth goal of the season in the 12th minute. Sophomore Tim Menzel earned the assist on Schulz's goal. The Griffins continued to dominate the play outshooting Manchester 13-1 in the first half but couldn't convert on their opportunities.
In the second half, Fontbonne again struggled to put the game away despite controlling the action. The Griffins outshot Manchester 11-5 in the second half but had to hang on for the 1-0 victory. For the game, Fontbonne outshot Manchester 24-6 and held a 2-0 advantage in corner kicks.
Fontbonne junior Ryan Essenpreiss recorded one save in picking up the shutout. The Griffins return to action tomorrow against North Central College at 5 pm.
